Identification

18–20·5 cm

  • Blackish head
  • White median stripe on forehead with whitish stripes on each side. The stripes transition to greenish from the end of the forehead back to the nape. (There may be a break in the stripes between the white and greenish)
  • White throat
  • Dull green (bright olive) back
  • Grey underparts

Distribution

Endemic to Mexico; does not overlap in distribution with the similar Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch.

Taxonomy

Green-striped Brush Finch has in the past been placed in genus Atlapetes and is placed by some authors in Buarremon.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized1:

  • A. v. verecundus:
  • Mountains of western Mexico (southern Sinaloa, northern Nayarit and southern Durango)
  • A. v. virenticeps:
  • Mountains of western Mexico (Jalisco and Colima to Morelos and western Puebla)

Habitat

Humid montane evergreen forest.

Behaviour

Diet

They feed on or near the ground. Not much information available about their diet, but probably consists of insects and plant material.
