Original file(643 × 700 pixels, file size: 89 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Photo by Reini This picture shows ssp. a autumnalis salvinii. This subspecies is recognisable by the lack of yellow on the cheelks. Though be aware that birds from Costa Rica may show a small amount of yellow on the lores/upper cheek. This might lead to a wrong identification where both species can be found as some autumnalis show very little yellow. Salvinii is larger than a autumnalis. The green is in comparison with a autumnalis rather dull. Showing some resemblance with the green of A f farinosa. Blue purple edges on the feathers of the nape and area surrounding the cheeks are more prominent in salvinii than in autumnalis. Eye-colour varies from orange to dark-red. White skin around the eyes can be much broader than seen on this bird, giving a "soft appearance". Some birds show pinkish-red beneath the mandible. Can easily be separated from ssp. a a diadema from Brazil by its unfeathered nostrils. In diadema these are completely covered with red feathers. Apart from this the red front of diadema is followed by a light blue patch which is separated from the blue on the nape by a (yellowish-) green patch at the back of the head. The blue etching of the nape feathers and sides of the neck is less prominent.
