Birding In Staffordshire (33 Viewers)

I would have one if I could afford it Col:-C Never mind you could always call me everytime a rare bird comes on and I will pay you a penny per call.:t::-O

Hi Neil,

a pager is the best way of getting info by far. I've an RBA Xstream.. £230.00 for the year which equates to £4.30 a week (a pint and half of lager)

Treat yourself to one ! :-O

All the Best

Sad to hear about Jim passing away. The best photo' of a Peregrine on my wall was taken by Jim.

Top man.

Many of you chaps obviously knew Jim well.... I was only in his company once, back in late June of this year... but what a character and a smashing bloke!

I had taken a pair of Leica Bins to him, as he was purchasing them off me.But the purpose of the visit was quickly forgotten as we sat there in his converted annexe and he showed me his Bird photo albums and he told me some of his stories! He even called ma a f@+!/n robber when i wouldn't reduce the price of the bins! :-O

One of birding's characters I reckon and I can understand why there's many posts on here in Jim's memory. RIP.

Rob

Whitmore

There's a set aside field on the other side of Bent Lane from the Severn Trent water treatment plant (half way btwn Whitmore and Stableford) which held loads of stuff this morning. Approx counts of 200 linnets, 100 tree sparrows, 40 chaffinch, 15 bramblings, 30 reed bunts, 10 yammers, 3 redpolls, 10 goldfinch, 3 greenfinch. Also 4-500 starlings, sparrowhawk and 100 redwings.

After a birdless month and bad weather, decided to replace seed etc on the feeder and within 15 minutes we had mixed flock of blue, long-tailed and coal tits and about 20 sparrows. Funny old game!!

Cheers
Craig

Vortex Bins

Guys,
A bit of a long shot I know but do any of you own a pair of Vortex Viper 8x32 bins? I need to upgrade and these receive glowing reviews online. I need to try before I buy and can't find any in stock within reasonable distance so if anybody has these maybe we could meet for a field test?

Cheers

Jason

The drake Mandarin was displaying this afternoon on the canal by Etruria Industrial Museum. But more importantly for some of you, the Black Redstart is still at Carsington Res in Derbyshire today, still on rocks near overflow at Millfields. Note Millfields car park is closed for the weekend but I hope this won't spoil your enjoyment:t:

Tut tut tut Nicolas, you naughty boy you know this is the Staffs thread now don't you, I will have to set the dog on you the next time I see you at Westport, that said a full week of overtime this week so will give Misty plenty of time to sharpen her claws and teeth;);)

This afternoon around Westport, 1pr Shoveler, 9x Great Crested Grebe, 1x Willow Tit, 25x Pochard, 3x Mute Swans, 1x Goldeneye, 1x Little Grebe, 2x Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1x Grey Heron.

The Ruddy Ducks which had been increasing nicely last month, have now all disappeared so you can all stop panicking, I even managed to go weeks without a mention of them on here or the blog!:t:

I will be suitably tooled up next time we meet then. One slice of bread should do the trick! While you were away, requests were main for scarce birds such as Black Redstarts that were in neighbouring counties. One is simply passing that information on. Now get back to your new bench.

Haha, half a slice of bread with her mate, as for the bench, you can't see much from it as there's a big bloody tree in the way, the council will prob come an chop it down next week though, as they seem to be chopping everything else down around Westport at the mo, there will be nothing left at this rate except for the vis ctr and water!
