Texas Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri: Colubridae) A non-venomous species but a snapper. This snake was ca. 1.5 m (5.0 ft) long. It was hanging out in a black willow tree (Salix nigra) along the margin of a wet oxbow.
Habitat
Bottomland, open park with a small oxbow, pecan grove with a number of other species of scattered trees at 147 m elevation.
Location
Lions Club Park, Temple, Bell County, Texas, USA.

Great day he may not be poisonous but he sure is nothing to be messed with. He does have that shape of the head though.

Good lord, this was startling!

It's fascinating and sinister: we don't expect a snake appear above us - we're probably hard-wired to find such a sight alarming, because of our evolutionary history. At the same time, it's a very beautiful creature. Exceptional work Stanley, thanks for sharing.
