Spotted Towhee preens
I've been fortunate a pair of the most beautiful birds I've ever photographed, a mating pair of spotted towhees, have been mixing with a large group of sparrows behind my home in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The towhees and sparrows have been in the same place for weeks, allowing many chances to get decent photos. This is one of my favorites, the male is pretty pleased with the treat he's found, if that's what the raised tail feathers indicate.
Habitat
Open and woodlands
Location
Mariposa, Calif.
Date taken
March 8, 2016
Scientific name
Pipilo maculatus
Equipment used
Nikon Coolpix P80
Congratulations to your beautiful residents and the great photo. I would like to know, if these birds are just as big as a sparrow, or are they bigger? Its long tail reminds me of a magpie. But they aren't that big, are they?

A gorgeous picture of this beauty showing a unique behavior. I hope it's not a trend setter, I can see the side walks with all these happy people with their "tails" in the air (lol). Well done Bob!!!
