Southern Lapwing - "Tero" The National bird of Uruguay (Vanellus chilensis)

Almost from the moment you land in Uruguay you will see these fearless birds on grass edges throughout the town. They also occur in wetlands where they might be expected to occur. I have even seen them referred to in football matches where they seem reticent to leave the pitch when a match begins. Truly an ubiquitous bird that seems to be fearless and will tolerate humans within very short range, even of its nesting sites. This is the Urguayan equivalent of the Australian Masked Lapwing which has identical behaviour patterns.
