Thanks, Stanley, for reminding me that this is Retama. Also known as Desert Broom, also known as Jerusalem Thorn (but not because of its range, it's not found anywhere near Jerusalem, that's just a mishearing of its name - girasol - in Spanish/Portuguese). Also known as Parkinsonia, Palo verde, Mexican palo verde, and even Jelly Bean Tree. Besides being beautiful when leafed out and blooming, as here, it has some unique qualities for surviving extremes from flood to drought. In wet conditions, it sets way more blossoms and fruits. In dry conditions, first the tiny leaflets fall off leaving the green twigs to do their work. If the drought persists, then the twigs fall off, but the bark is green with chlorophyll and continues to process sunlight and CO2 into sugars and starches.
