Plains Zebra (Equus quagga)
South Africans pronounce it zeb-ra, with a short "e." These are the subspecies "E. q. burchellii" (formerly "E. burchellii") aka Burchell's Zebra which are considered "near threatened" by IUCN. They were hunted to near extinction but survive in a number of game reserves and protected areas. Note the characteristic reduced leg stripes. The extinct Quagga (E. quagga) of South Africa turned out to be a race of Burchell's Zebra. First described in 1785 its name had priority over "E. burchelli" which wasn't described until 1824. Thus the scientific name of Burchell's Zebra needed changing when the two were lumped.
