Plain Chachalaca
While stalking a Roadrunner, we were surprised by this Plain Chachalaca which flew across the road into a nearby tree. I took this photo from the car window. Endemic to southern Texas and adjacent Mexico, this is presumably the most northerly race "O. v. mccalli" which is paler and has more white on the tip of its tail than other populations. The black area on its throat is bare skin which turns red during the breeding season.
