Pileated Woodpecker
Marsh. Instead we opted for an early morning at a nearby metropark. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the loud drumming of this large North American woodpecker which we quickly found near the top of a dead snag. Although widespread, this area is marginally out of range and we were not expecting to see this iconic species here. It occurs more regularly in eastern and southern Ohio. This is presumably the longer-billed northern race "D. p. abieticola."
