Not a pretty sight

Not a pretty sight (Cathartes aura)

Not going for "cuteness" today. These three aren't even all that great photos. But it was kind of a thrill seeing these beasts close up. The turkey vultures (there were two of them here) were quite close to the trail - downright ugly birds doing a downright ugly but necessary task: feeding on a dead wader. It's hard to beat these guys for ugliness, with those scaly red heads, the see-through nostrils, the bulgingly hooded eyes, the dingy brown-black plumage with random white patches that look as if gulls had pooped on them. But it was, as I said, rather a thrill to see them up close and feeding, not to mention the close flyover when they took off.

:-O LOL, girl, what a way to describe them... I bet they wouldn't be very pleased if they could hear you! ;)

I understand your thrill, they must be quite exciting to see so close!!! :bounce: A super pic taken in your chance, well done!!! :t: :t:

:-O Too funny, love your narration!! :t: It's prob better you didn't get any closer of a mug shot, poor things really are NOT at all cute and cuddly, but their job requires a clean shaven head! ;) Great that you were able to get even that close, thanks for sharing! :t:

Ugly yes, but probably not to their mothers. Very nice close up, you can almost make out the wattle. Great photo and narrative.

Doc, you're way too hard on them....can't see anything especially ugly with them! BTW, interesting shot! Ann
