This mallard is in plumage and looks similar to a female.

If you want further input on the identification, I would suggest you post it on the identification forum. Include the location and date of the photo and you should get a good response.
 
I guess its not needed. Your answer seems to be correct. I had no idea that they go through that plumage you described. And it also explains why there were almost no "male" at the site of maybe 40-50 mallards and all feathers laying around everywhere.
So I was wrong and this is a male.
I guess I learned something new today also :). Thank you for pointing it out
