Look: No fingerprints! (Procyon lotor)

Wearing gloves, see?

Saw this sneaky raccoon stealing bird (or squirrel) snacks someone had tossed by a lake in Golden Gate Park yesterday. He was so bold he scared me. They can be viscious animals, and if they seem "tame" it may be a sign of rabies, so when he came towards me I was prepared to run. But I guess he was only begging. Or showing off how clever he was at not leaving fingerprints at the site of the crime ;) He went back to foraging bread crumbs and seeds, then suddenly took off and swam to a little island. Seconds later another walker came along, together with a big dog. My guess was that the raccoon smelled or heard the dog and took off. He was clearly not scared of people ... which is probably not a good thing. I don't think the park managers are happy to have a people-fearless raccoon in a popular area of the park.

Mmmm... no, I don't suppose they would be Ann.

A great picture you've got of this guy though, so that was a bit of a result for you, wasn't it.

Well one lass.

Very attractive story behind the shot , if so managers should do some thing for people and this animal in a safe way for all , tfs ;)

An interesting narrative, Ann, and a lovely capture of this raccoon.

You're right, raccoons can be very bold and confrontational when they get used to people. What do you expect from a guy wearing a mask? lol! You being careful with this animal is well founded. Interesting story and a nice photo togo with it. Tfs

As much as they drive me crazy they are great to watch as long as they are not dragging one of my feeders into the brook ;) Nicely captured Doc.

Very nice!

We have these rascals in Germany since 1934. They started out as two couples of raccoons being brought into the wild on April 12, 1934 at the Edersee (Lake Eder). A few were added by escaping from fur farms.
The breakthrough came after the Berlin wall and the rest of the iron curtain was torn down and nowadays the raccoons even conquered the Netherlands.
