Lodgepole Chipmunk (Neotamias speciosus)

Chipmunks in the Sierra Nevada are notoriously difficult to identify. Thanks to John Harris and Jim Patten for confirming this one as a Lodgepole Chipmunk in bright, post-summer molt pelage. Note the buffy, not white guard hairs on the tail as well as the lack of a black stripe underneath the prominent white dorsal stripe. The similar Long-eared Chipmunk is not usually found at this elevation (8500 ft.) but is common at lower elevations. Formerly placed in the genus "Tamias."
