Lake Duck
A close relative of the familiar Ruddy Duck ("O. jamaicensis") of North America, the Lake Duck is confined to freshwater lakes and ponds in southern South America. The black head recalls a number of similar dark-headed stifftails (Oxyurini) including the Andean Duck ("O. ferruginea") and Bluebill Duck ("O. australis") of Australia. Occasional examples of Ruddy Duck with all dark heads are believed to be melanistic anomalies. Females are similar to female Ruddy Ducks.
