Indian Gray Mongoose (Urva edwardsii)

Note the silver-gray, salt-and-pepper speckled fur which helps identify this species. They are omnivores, dining on snakes, birds, mice, insects and fruit. They are reportedly resistant to snake venom. The short story "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" by Rudyard Kipling tells of a clever, young but agile Indian Mongoose battling with a couple of venomous cobras. The great Chuck Jones (of Coyote & Roadrunner fame) made this story into an animated film narrated by Orson Wells. Plural is mongooses.
