Great-billed Heron
A plain heron with an unusually large bill. Scarce in mangroves along the coasts of SE Asia to Australasia. This is presumably the grayer, longer-billed nominate race. Formerly considered "near threatened" but downgraded to "least concern." Status not clear but appears to occur in low densities. Some populations have been extirpated by the destruction of mature mangrove forests. We only encountered this species once on our trip.
