Garden Snail (Cornu aspersum)

Widely introduced from Europe where valued as a great delicacy. Introduced to California for food in the 1850's but now considered an invasive agricultural pest. They occur in two forms depending on the orientation of their spiral shell. This is the more common dextral (right-handed) form. Like most land snails, they are hermaphrodites having both male and female organs. Formerly included in the genus "Helix."
