Common Loon
An adult in winter plumage lacking the scaly appearance of the juvenile. This iconic species is primarily a migrant and winter visitor to California from breeding grounds in boreal lakes of Alaska and Canada. Note the legs are far back. They feed by diving, often staying under water for several minutes. Sometimes called "Great Northern Diver."
