Wiki, "originally inhabited stony ground in mountains...". They often use places for their nests very close to humans. I would say, they check you out and if you are not a threat, do they come close.

Nice image, JB.
I have a son who is a very avid cycler. Probably a different kind of riding though, based on the type/design of his seat/saddle and yours. His average rides are 30-60 miles with some rides in excess of 100 miles.
