Field Sparrow
The combination of complete white eyering, reddish crown, and pink bill help distinguish this species. Although still reasonably common throughout New Jersey at all seasons, this species has declined throughout most of its range in recent years. Breeding bird surveys found a decrease of 3.2% per year from 1966-2003. We encountered only a few and those were rather shy and hard to see. Loss of habitat appears to be the main factor in their decline, with grassy fields being co-opted for development. Two races are currently recognized. This is the nominate "S. p. pusilla" which is found in the East. It usually shows a brownish ear patch which contrasts with its gray face as seen here.
