Burrowing Owls - Cape Coral, FL

Burrowing Owls / 051315 / Cape Coral, Lee Co., FL
Cape Coral, has a Population is 181,211. There is an area in this small city that has several scattered vacant lots. Each lot has a family of Burrowing Owls. These Owls are right next to the street. Each BUOW location has their burrows and little wood crosses on which to perch. The general area is in the center of this city. I have never seen anything like this before. The surrounding neighborhood is like any other. People & dogs, cars, etc. They are not at all afraid of humans & all this commotion as I parked in the street right next to them I was only about 5-10 feet away. Further I remained in the car with the window down. In fact, they were so close that I could hardly focus my DLSR camera on them. The pix that I captured were better than any other BUOWs pix that I previously taken. These guys are found here year around.

Lovely photo!

You are lucky to have these far more common and accessible. Our local subspecies (Western Burrowing Owl, A. c. hypugaea) is listed as threatened and rare to see or photograph. I've had the privilege only once despite knowing exactly where a couple nests are.
