Botta's Pocket Gopher (Thomomys bottae)

Spending 90% of their time in the safety of their tunnels they often pull vegetation down roots first. Although considered a pest in many areas, they are also beneficial in that they aerate the soil. The name "pocket" comes from their large, fur-lined cheek pouches which can be turned inside out.
