Characteristics
It measures between 12.5 and 13 centimeters in length. It has a body mass between 13 and 15 grams (Lopes, 2012).
The adult male stands out for the exuberance of its vibrant blue color, present throughout its body and which gives it its scientific name (caerulescens) which means “the color of the sky” in Latin. The male is also distinguished by the intense yellow color of its beak.
Young males in their first year have similar plumage to the female and a dark beak. In the second year, the males already have a yellow beak, but the plumage is variegated with blue and sooty-brown (it is probably this plumage that has been interpreted as being that of adult males molting). Only in the third year do males acquire the entirely cobalt blue plumage, typical of the species (Allen, 1981).
The female is predominantly brown in color, camouflaging itself with the environment.
Juveniles, with a similar color to the female, gain a blue tone as they become mature.
The puppy has wide lip corners and a dark brown iris. The plumage is predominantly dark brown, with the central portion of the wing covers and back feathers being dark grayish brown, a color shared by the remiges and rectrices. The chest is lighter, becoming almost white on the belly and crest.
