An adult male. Females are browner on the back. They have among the longest legs relative to body size, second only to the Flamingos. Taxonomy and geographic variation controversial. Formerly lumped with the Black-necked and White-backed Stilts of the Americas, and the White-headed (or Pied) Stilt of Australasia, but now usually split into four or five species.
