The broad base to the bill and short legs are characteristic of this genus of old-world flycatchers. This individual is presumably the migratory race "M. d. poonensis", a winter visitor to Sri Lanka characterized by paler brown above, mottling on throat, breast, and flanks and less contrasting eye-ring. Formerly designated "M. latirostris" following Mlíkovský who argued that the name "dauurica" was not only wrong, but a typo as well. However this conclusion refuted by Dickinson et al. Formerly lumped with Sulawesi Brown Flycatcher and Brown-streaked Flycatcher.
