Nottinghamshire Birding (1 Viewer)

Originally thought to be an Icterine Warbler but now re-identified as a Melodious Warbler.

At Tiln GP
Male still singing and showing well near the River Idle mid-morning; from the sharp bend on Tiln Lane, go through the large double gates and follow the track southwest for 0.75 miles to the trees c.50m beyond the wooden gate SK698837.

Where is the best place to park for access here please?

Enjoyed a quick look at the Melodious Warbler today. What a pleasant experience - considerate and helpful birders all of whom were patient and behaved impeccably.
Great stuff.
And congrats to a fantastic find for someone.

Please be mindful of local residents. Park anywhere along Tiln Lane but do not block the gates or field access points and park onto the grass verge. This is a single track road with few passing places. There is an active farm and a small village community of Tiln just 200 yards past the gate to the wood.

Good luck - it's been a sculker today in the high winds.

Thanks for that.

We are heading up to Nottingham/Mansfield on Saturday and was wondering where would be good to take a visit to whilst we were up there.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Richard

Although I no longer live in the County, locally based Notts birders might join me in saying Attenborough Nature Reserve is often a good call at this time of year. Bittern sightings have been recorded again recently for example, including today, and a very decent Visitor Centre includes a small but well run cafe/restaurant.
The website www.attenboroughnaturecentre.co.uk will give you details of location, sightings etc., and more generally in Nottinhamshire, the Notts OS website is helpful too.

Hope this helps and have a good trip.

Andy R.

Have a good trip

Andy

Thanks for that, Ill head there and have a look around. Really appreciated taking the time to point me in the right direction.

Regards

Richard

Is anybody able (and/or prepared!) to give an approximate area to look for the Parrot Crossbills on Budby Common? Or, for that matter, where the common is?
We are a party of birders travelling from mid-Cheshire on Wednesday next. Thank-you in anticipation

Budby Common is beside the A616 northwest of Ollerton. Park either in Budby village and walk south for about 3/4 mile, or else at the roadside by the entrance to Budby South Forest (aka Budby Common) which is about 1/2 a mile NW of the Edwinstowe turn and is quite obvious. If doing the latter walk west onto the common. The birds are easiest to see when they come to drink at puddles along an east-west track near the southern end of the open area. This track is the southern edge of a triangle of obvious tracks.

I'd recommend against parking on the main road on the A616. While a nice spot, it has been a target of car thieves in the past. Budby Village is the better option. Good luck!

Visited the site today and would also suggest parking in Budby village is the best option. From there you can take a trail at the top of the village up onto the common. From there you can look over the site and the Parrots are generally seen in the "dip" in the centre of the area.

Lound's bird club has the best instructions I've seen on finding the exact spot: http://www.loundbirdclub.com/localbirdsightings.htm

A side note; they showed fantastically today! Saw them for a couple of hours just after midday with between 12 to 16 feeding in low pines and coming down to pools to drink only a matter of feet away!

How long have the crossbills been around for? Are they dug in for the winter now? Travelling down to Newark for Christmas and it'd be a nice present to spot these on Tuesday!

They have been at Budby Common for about 2 weeks now, I saw them on Sunday and there were 14 of them then. They normally breed between Jan and March so perhaps they will stay, as there is plenty of food in the area.
