  1. Gone Fishin'

    Gone Fishin'

A Grey Heron with the catch of the day.
  2. Egret fishing hole

    Egret fishing hole

This portion of the culvert get deeper, too deep for most of the sandpipers so the egrets have this stretch all to themselves. There are thousands of small fish here in the deeper part, mostly young Tilapia so there's plenty of food to go around. There are four species of white egrets in this...
  3. Black-winged Stilt

    Black-winged Stilt

I'm sorry, yet another Black-Winged Stilt photo. They're such photogenic birds, I can't help myself!
  4. For Amber waves of grain.....

    For Amber waves of grain.....

This Scaly-Breasted Munia must feel as if he is in Nirvana surrounded by ripe grains of rice just for him!
  5. Evening bath time

    Evening bath time

A quartet of White-Cheeked Starlings pause from their evening bath.
  6. Kiss me!

    Kiss me!

What looks like a romantic interlude is just the angle of the photo as a Spot-Billed Duck nibbles on rice grains just behind a Grey Heron.
  7. The Three Amigos

    The Three Amigos

Here is a nice group shot of three common winter visitors to Okinawa. From back to front, Long-Toed Stint, Common Redshanks, Sharp-Tailed Sandpiper.
  8. Ryukyu Green Pigeon

    Ryukyu Green Pigeon

This bird flew right in front of Tom and I and landed in a nearby tree, I did my best Green Pigeon imitation to distract him while I got close enough for the shot.
  9. Eastern Great White Egret

    Eastern Great White Egret

There was a small pond at the Peace Prayer park at the southern end of Okinawa. Had a few Little Egrets wading in the pond and a few of their big cousins up on the rocks. This one was kind enough to pose for me. I recall reading of splitting the Great White Egret species. Eastern Great White...
  10. Two Stints

    Two Stints

A trip to the southern end of the island today paid off with a capture of two species of Stint right next to each other. Temminck's on the left and Red-Throated on the right.
  11. Common Kingfisher

    Common Kingfisher

Driving down a small backroad, I came upon this small pond and found this Kingfisher perched so nicely for me. My best shot of this species yet!
  12. Mayfly touching down

    Mayfly touching down

I had to stand still and wait for just the right moment to get the wings open and feet touching at the same time as this critter lead me on a "wild Mayfly chase" along the trail. My persistence paid off and I was rewarded with this shot.
  13. Critically Endangered-Pryer's Woodpecker

    Critically Endangered-Pryer's Woodpecker

Had nice views of this critically endangered bird today. They are tough to find, tougher still to get in the open and even tougher to photograph! This one was in thick cover, but I managed to get a few shots of him. Still waiting for that "one" shot of these guys!
  14. Little-ringed Plover

    Little-ringed Plover

To compare with the Long-billed Plover photo, a bit smaller and thicker bird, shorter bill.
  15. Black-winged Stilt

    Black-winged Stilt

Black and white bird with the blue sky of Okinawa as a background. My best flight shot of a Stilt yet.
  16. Long-billed Plover

    Long-billed Plover

My birding partner Tom and I were out a few days ago and noticed what we first thought were Little-ringed Plovers that looked somehow different,a bit longer, slimmer, sure enough, after posting my pics on the Bird ID page (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=153403) several of our learned...
  17. Bee and Basil

    Bee and Basil

This beautiful coloured "Blue-Banded" bee was in my herb garden visiting the basil flowers. Just had to run inside and get the camera for a few shots!
  18. Precision flying

    Precision flying

These Roseate Terns (along with 50 or so of their pals) were diving for fish near some nets just down from a bridge. It was a hot sunny day and I got a bit burned but plenty of these birds in flight on a nice day. It was worth the effort!
  19. Okinawa Rail

    Okinawa Rail

Another shot of an Okinawa Rail taken while guiding a visiting Belgian Birder. He had 15 lifers that day! Nicolas, I hope you had some good shots as well and enjoyed the day! Thank you for the Westy 12's!
  20. Albino Blue Rock Thrush

    Albino Blue Rock Thrush

Here's a photo of the Albino Blue Rock Thrush my friend Tom found in Okinawa. He told me the location and I was able to get a few photos of him. Quite an unusual find and the first wild albino bird I've seen!
  21. Eastern Great Tit

    Eastern Great Tit

With a Grey dreary day and basically a black & white bird, this photo looks like I was practicing my B&W photography.
  22. Spread your wings and fly.....

    Spread your wings and fly.....

Leony, this one's for you babe!
  23. Umbrella snails

    Umbrella snails

These interesting snails are found on Okinawa and a few of the outer islands. They have an unusual shape and almost look like the hats found in S.E. Asia or like an umbrella.
  24. Pacific Golden Plover

    Pacific Golden Plover

To compare with the previous photo, here is the Pacific G.P. A bit lighter and "golder" overall. Has same white at forehead but not quite as thick, white runs down along sides, thickens at wing bend but continues along the flanks, does not abruptly stop as in the American G.P.
  25. American Golden Plover

    American Golden Plover

This is what I believe is a rare catch for Okinawa, An American Golden Plover in with a flock of Pacific Golden Plovers. Notice the darker overall appearance, the thick white on the forehead and the white bar at the wing bend and the lack of white continuing along the flanks, the gold dorsal...
