Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Spring is here After a (comparatively) cold, long winter, spring has arrived. Our Redstarts and Robin have left but have been replaced by Alpine Swifts. Only a few Alpine Swifts at present and flying very high. Soon their numbers will grow and they will be joined by hundreds of Swifts.

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

It's a long time since I've posted here. In August 2016 we left our exurban home near Houston, Texas and moved to Barcelona. Unfortunately, we now see many fewer birds at home. Our old house had two gardens, was surrounded by other large gardens and often attracted 20+ species in a day. Our...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Lots of residents have been busy breeding and so the feeders outside our living-room window have been very busy. Currently we are getting several visits a day from: 6 Blue Jays 6-8 Northern Cardinals 2-4 Carolina Chickadees 2-3 Carolina Wrens up to 30 White-winged Doves 12+ House Sparrows 2...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

I wish, Larry. As I do every year, I've already spent hours poring over photos of the flock but so far no luck.

Quietish in our yards but the Cedar Waxwing flock at work has grown to around 1,300 birds. Jeff

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Pretty quiet in our yards (except for 20+ House Sparrows several times a day) now that many winter residents seem to have left. Most days we have: Northern Cardinals Carolina Chickadees Chipping Sparrows White-winged Doves Carolina Wren Blue Jay Northern Mockingbird Orange-crowned Warbler...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Cedar Waxwings were being cute in our backyard yesterday. They were giving each other little bouquets of blossoms. Saw many more Cedar Waxwings at work today. The flock is up to around 500. If other years are any guide, the flock should double in size by the end of the month. Jeff...

Perhaps, but 100 Magpies must be quite a spectacle. Jeff

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

I looked out of our front window yesterday to see 80 Cedar Waxwings perched on top of our oak tree. Pretty sight. Jeff

Hope you're back to full health very soon, Larry. In the meantime keep looking out of those windows. Jeff

Last two winters at the college where I work we had a flock of 1000+. That's quite a sight! Jeff

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Quieter in our yards yesterday. Only Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Cardinal, three American Robins, a dozen Chipping Sparrows and two dozen House Sparrows. Pretty quiet at work, too. 70 minutes of birding for the Great Backyard Bird Count turned up...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

I haven't posted much lately because our yards haven't had many birds for ages. In the second half of last year we rarely saw more than a handful of species on any day. Even our resident N Cardinals and Blue Jays deserted us. The trend continued until this weekend. Things changed on Saturday...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Our yards have been very quiet (except for House Sparrows & White-winged Doves) for months. Northern Cardinals and Blue Jays stopped visiting in August. Cardinals have just started visiting again but Blue Jays are still totally absent. I don't know why residents (inc. Downy & Red-bellied...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Finally starting to get some action in our yards after 6-7 weeks of quiet. Unfortunately, most of the action is House Sparrows: 35 at one point yesterday. The only other visitors were two Carolina Chickadees, a White-winged Dove, an Orange-crowned Warbler, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. A major...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Our yards have been quiet for weeks. Maybe the presence of a Cooper's Hawk hasn't helped, tho it seems to prefer rats to birds. Two possible winter residents showed up in our yards on Saturday: Orange-crowned Warbler and Pine Warbler. However, I haven't seen them since, so they were probably...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Our yards are still really quiet here in Houston. Even our residents are visiting only rarely. Luckily, we have Ruby-throated Hummers still passing through. Also, the first big cold front of the autumn has just arrived and I'm hoping it will bring in more birds. Jeff

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Very quiet in our Texas garden at present. Most resident birds seem to be hiding away, perhaps cos they're embarrassed by being in moult. We do have a few Ruby-throated Hummingbirds stopping off to fuel up for their 600-mile flight across the Gulf of Mexico. Jeff www.jeffincypress.blogspot.com

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

We used to get Eurasian Collared Doves in our yards, plus Mourning Doves and Inca Doves. Now we usually get only hordes of White-winged Doves with the very occasional visit by a Mourning Dove. Jeff www.jeffincypress.blogspot.com
