I've been trying to ID this bee from its very prominent antennae using image searches but without luck. This was a very large bee about 2cm long and the massive mandibles also should be a clue but no luck so any help appreciated. Location North Wales this week. Thanks, John

Anybody know if this is a queen B. Lapidarius ? There is a very small hint of red on the rear if you zoom in. Fairly largeish specimen, quite docile near a hide in Mid-Wales yesterday. Thanks John Large image here>>> http://www.flickr.com/photos/58758635@N04/7389053390/sizes/l/in/photostream/

    Raptor id Please

This was flying and then circling over the RSPB at Conwy today- high tide, a bit far away so hence the poor picture but it does show the tail barring and a reddish flush on the breast. It was smaller than a buzzard. I am leaning toward a male Sparrowhawk - any ideas please. Thanks, Johnty

Bit of disucssion in the Talacre hide today so I took this shot which I think shows that the one on the left is a Spotshank in winter plumage with a redshank alongside for comparison. Any supporters for a spotshank (on left)? Thanks John

    crested tit

Worth a look to appreciate the capture of this one - it's a digiscoped pic so presumably from a tripod and is sharp as you like. Great. http://www.birdforum.net/pp_gallery/showphoto.php/photo/34885

    Gatekeeper

Hope this isnt a stupid question, but where does the name "Gatekeeper" originate from? It seems so at odds with most names which usually incorporate some element of the butterfly's appearance in them. Johnty

    Hi from Johnty

Joined the forum over the weekend and just wanted to say L O 'cause I saw my first short eared owl this afternoon at Burton Marsh farm - knockout, especially when he was sparring with a crow over his bit of meadow - awesome. John
