Identification
17–18 cm (6¾-7 in)
Like the Spectacled Spiderhunter but smaller with a longer and thinner bill, narrower and less distinct yellow eye ring (usualy incomplete eyering), typically not linking up with yellow ear patch and more conspicuous yellow ear coverts. Plumage olive above, pale olive-grey below appearing faintly streaked, becomes yellowish on abdomen and beneath tail.
Distribution
Asia: Tenasserim (Myanmar) and Malay Peninsula to Greater Sundas.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]: Two subspecies are recognized:[1]
- A. C. chrysogenys - South Burma, south Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and western Borneo
- A. C. harrissoni -East Borneo
Habitat
Lowland forests, forest edges, plantations and wooded foothill gardens. Mangroves and secondary forests.
Behaviour
Frequents the canopy and the crown of smaller trees. Gathers to feed in flowering trees with other species. Will descend to feed on flowering shrubs.
Diet
Their diet consists of insects and spiders; also nectar, pollen and small fruits. They are particularly fond of over-ripe bananas.
