So I reported a hen harrier in the restricted area off the Tagus last week.
Here are the photos

The worrying thing was a montagues harrier was reported the next day in the same area.

Did I make a mistake? I appreciate not much to go on…

I agree with all, that I cant ID this bird with confidence from these pictures, too. But:
I agree with Butty. Look at the silhuoette, jizz and the slender wings.
More, I see the "hook" at the wing-tip, which I have only seen in Montagus before. More, this is a jizz feature of distant Montagues for me.
More, I would use these pictures to explain the typical jizz of a Montagues vs Hen (the two regular Harrier-species around Ziesar, where I am most time of the year now).

I hope this post doesnt come out as an offense. Yes, its unIDable with confidence for me, too. But, please user these pictures for training. It will help you next time, you see one of those two similar species in the field. Trust me.

The bird crossed the road not too far ahead of me but by the time I'd stopped and lost it over the field it was too far away. It definitely looked a stocky bird close up! The wings also looked 'blunter' than these photos suggest.

The second worrying factor for me was when I finally got to review the photos this morning and sure enough the wings do look slim.

I appreciate everyones comments and yes a great education - as I have always found on Harriers on this website...

I'll revise to ringtail
