Birding near Borobodur? (1 Viewer)

Hi,
I will be spending three days at Borobodur in early July. Aside from sightseeing I hope to do some birding too, but I can find no information whatsoever online about what to expect in the area and the best spots to visit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Temmie,
I've checked out the Nusantara site for the Jogja area. In a way it might be good not to know what to expect as surprise sightings are always the best. If you are in the area and see a guy walking around with binoculars its probably me, so say hello and we can compare notes. After Borobodur I have three days at Gunnung Gede before I return to work in Bandung, and there is loads of info about that place so a week of sightseeing and birds is guaranteed anyway. Thanks for the tip,
Mark

Hello Mark,

I'm not sure you can find something good in Borobudur, maybe just Javan Munia, Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker or if you're lucky, Javan Kingfisher. If you have time to visit the another temple (Prambanan), you can find Java Sparrow. I'm not sure birdwatching is prohibited here, i've been there a few times and it's ok.. except for the entry ticket wich is too high (even for local people!).
If you have more time you can visit Merapi National Park (Javan Sunbird, White-bellied Fantail, Javan Hawk Eagle, Javan Kingfisher, Black-banded Barbet, Sunda Minivet etc) or Ngongap Beach (Chrismast Island Frigatebird, White-tailed Tropicbird).
I can take you to Merapi, if you wanted to. I live in Jogja and totally free at July.

Dear Cendrawish,
thank you very much for your kind offer. I will send you a private message to discuss the possibilities of a trip to Merapi.
Best regards,
Mark
