Help for next week - Sproughton

Hi Joe, the area I think you are referring to is an Island formed by the course of the River Gipping and an old canal cut, the small lakes are very difficult to access from the Industrial Estate. There was an old Bailey Bridge from the old Sugar Beet Factory, to get to it you would have to...

    Suffolk Birding

water level Hi Sean, glad you saw plenty on your excursion, still waiting for my first cuckoo, as regards Alton in my expierence it seems that every year they top the res to the brim, just after the waterfowl have built nests and have eggs in them. Why they can't do this in Jan/Feb is a mystery...

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Great to hear 4 seperate Nightingales singing on my walk yesterday, also Chiffchaff, Whitethroats, Blackcaps and my first Swallow. Barn Owl hunting in bright sunshine, saw it make a kill, so either very hungry or feeding young. Have posted a seperate rant regarding the waterlevels in...

    Anglian Water levels at Alton

Yet again (as in most years) I am mystified by Anglian Waters decision making regarding the water levels at Alton Water Reservoir. All winter when we've had plenty of rainfall they have had the water level 2-4 ft below maximum, now just as the Swans,Grebes, Water rail, Coots and Ducks have...

    Bird Deaths

Sadly it appears the weather could be having an effect on the bird population, today, whilst walking in my usual area, all within a short distance of each other, I came across the remains of a Heron, Kestrel and a Green Woodpecker.

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Had a walk in the Birchwood area today, the reservoir is full at the moment seems to have pushed a large majority of the waterfowl elsewhere, plenty of tufties and coots. Several pairs of Goldeneye, Great Crested Grebes and a single Slav. Away from the water the sun got the Skylarks...

Spill? Hi Johnny, re the photo, I would guess there has been a spill of some discription further upstream, look to be absorbant mats, though I'm suprised there's not a warning notice.

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Hi (PaulE) , hope you had some luck with the GNDiver, the bird I saw didn't seem at all unperturbed by my presence so was able to get good views of it. It can cover a huge distance underwater over 50 metres I'm sure, so in that respect it is quite mobile. I think the Goldeneye are great...

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Hi PaulE, Had another look yesterday, surprise only a single Greenshank no other waders, suspect they were just sheltering/resting there in the strong winds last week. Common Terns also appear to have departed. Was nice to see 3 Little Grebes in front of the hide. Noticed a single...

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Had a walk to the Hide to the East of Lemons Hill Bridge earlier, the water level is about 6 feet down from spring levels so plenty of shoreline exposed. There are 3 islands now exposed in front of the hide. Plenty of birdlife resting on them including several Greenshanks, 20+ Lapwings...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

Dipper Hi Rory, probably a bit of a trek for you but I have seen Dippers below Aasleagh Falls near Lenanne (not sure, it may just be into Mayo though), Grey Wagtails there also. Have seen an occasional Kingfisher when out on the Corrib but no guaranteed area in particular. Probably best just...
