    Get outta there!

We weren't about to leave the bird tower. Not with Garganey ducks and a (for Norway) rare Great Egret on the lake. But apparently one pair of Mew gulls had made its nest on the roof of the bird tower and they weren't happy to have us so "close" (not that there was any way for us to get...
  3. Young Mew Gull

    Young Mew Gull

Another from a sunny day in juve season. The bird was on a little rise in the lawn around the botanical gardens pond. Crouching down, I was able to get pretty much eye level with it.

A lifer for me. Spotted on our lake by birding friends, we decided to take a drive and try to find it. Luck was with me because it was in the same location as reported a couple days earlier. These gulls normally are found on the coast but I guess this youngster decided it liked the warmer...

Mew Gull in Flight AK SER'14

This species was the most abundant gull species we saw in our visits this spring to Nome and surroundings and to Anchorage. It was breeding in those parts of Alaska. This individual was one of several individuals nesting on the shore of a small island in a lake at a city park in Anchorage.

    Through my hospital window

Not much of Aloktewari's balcony diversity here at the hospital. I've seen a great tit nesting under one of the balconies across the courtyard from my window, and yesterday spotted this mew gull pecking around some planters atop that balcony and also peering over the balcony edge. Perhaps he...

The most numerous species along that stretch of the riverbank are the mew gulls. Could be a reason why they're also called "common gulls", eh? Ya think?

Locally, this should be subspecies L. c. brachyrhynchus, but I can't positively distinguish the wingtips from L. c. kamtschatschensis, of which Birds of North America Online says "reports along west coast of North America remain uncertain. The distinction is in the size of the black area, but...

Is Mew Gull right name for this bird or is it Common Gull? Or both?

    Help! [1]

I think that was what it was calling. I would have missed two Common Gulls in a lake full of Black-headed Gulls but they were both calling rather loudly! [I thought they were juvenile Herring Guills at first but stand corrected after comments below. I always half expect this with Gulls! Thanks]
