Siberian Cranes in Japan (1 Viewer)

Hello,

A question for a friend visiting Japan. What is the status of Siberian Crane in the recent years? Are they annual and twitchable? Are any reliable birds present this winter?

best,

There was a family group of three reported a few weeks ago, relatively near Tokyo. I'm not sure what's happened to them though or if they're still around. There was some talk of their presence being suppressed because photographers were disturbing them.

My general understanding is that occasional birds turn up from time to time and they may be twitchable. They've sometimes occured in the crane flocks at Arasaki, Kyushu in previous years but none have been there this winter.

As said by Andrew, not quite annual, but when birds do show up the localities tend to be well-reported and thus twitchable. Nice if at Arasaki as it truly would make the set impressive (as if it isn't already!). None there last two winters either.

Thanks a lot so far!

Andrew, do you mean the single bird reported at Minami-ku, Niigata on Ebird?

What is the best way to get informed about current sightings in Japan for a non-Japanese speaking birder? Is there a Japanese version of ebird or ornitho?

No, I think these are different birds. Not sure whether they were posted on ebird.

Other than the Kantori Yahoo group and occasional submissions to ebird, I'm not really aware of any way to get news of recent reports from Japan. Would be interested to know too, if possible.
