    Deer culling the natural way

At this point I think we need to define what we mean by trophy hunters. I tend to think of them as those going out with the purpose of getting a large or nice-looking animal, as opposed to hunting strictly for meat, and not caring what it looks like. I would venture to say that the majority of...

    Deer culling the natural way

I think in a large way, it's a cultural and personality difference, and I think we should recognize that those on either side, hunters and non-hunters, aren't wrong, just different. That may be true in the Czech Republic, I won't argue there. In America, however, conservation has historically...

    Deer culling the natural way

I agree, and I'll add that most trophy hunters are also pro-conservation. Why? Why? Is the simple wanting of a large life list abhorrent? Or a nice antique collection? Or a cool car?

    Deer culling the natural way

I get quite annoyed when every government decision has to spend a year in court because someone doesn't like it. Litigation has grown into a ridiculous monster in this country.

    Deer culling the natural way

Please don't take this as me being mean or rude, but I think you don't get it. I'm certain that there are meat hunters who behave abhorrently. That doesn't mean the entire activity or group of people gets condemned. I'm certain there are fishermen that behave abhorrently, but that doesn't mean...

    Deer culling the natural way

Also, the news doesn't report on the guy who ethically shoots a nice elk in the Idaho backcountry, because it isn't newsworthy. Shocking and disgusting stories like the one you related are newsworthy, and so that's what you see.

    Deer culling the natural way

Did I not say that there are some abhorrent and repulsive trophy hunters? The scum you described is just that, and he certainly didn't kill the lion by ethical means. Their stupidity, however, does not mean that trophy hunting is not a legitimate pastime. Just because someone does something...

    Deer culling the natural way

And also as long as it does not endanger the health of the animal population.

    Deer culling the natural way

Why? Trophy hunters still keep the meat, they aren't wasting the animal, and that right there means there is no inherent problem with it. Getting a bigger or better looking animal is no different than getting a larger life list. Besides, if you read any respected hunting publication, you'll find...

That's entirely reasonable, I guess I misunderstood your post

    Deer culling the natural way

I have no idea of the details here, so you may well be right. But it's worthy to discuss the fact that the bison aren't going to be producing any meat to eat. It is impossible (and unnecessary) to conserve all land as purely natural, but the land that isn't conserved should still be managed in a...

    Deer culling the natural way

Sigh... I googled "deer overpopulation", and wow, Scientific American is an insult to the word "scientific". Thankfully there are some good articles out there as well. It seems Cuyahoga National Park has a good thing going: Are There Too Many Deer? - Cuyahoga Valley National Park (U.S. National...

    Deer culling the natural way

Hmm, the difference I guess is probably population density. Deer can coexist in suburbia much better than predators (or hunters). I have family in Franklin County, VA, who report increasing numbers of bear and I've heard of at least one mountain lion. So perhaps the overpopulation is in part...

    Deer culling the natural way

I get this, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. There are more bears, mountain lions, and coyotes around then there used to be (unless I am mistaken) and farming isn't exactly new (perhaps it's more efficient farming, e.g. more high-yielding crops and less pastures). Where I live in Ohio deer...

    Deer culling the natural way

I think it was a large herd (is that the correct term for a group of deer?) that was decimating a crop, so the goal was just control. Sadly the meat probably went to waste, unless they had a good plan for it.

    Deer culling the natural way

If I recall correctly, I heard of someone in western Virginia who killed 35 deer in one night with a control permit. I really don't understand this. Surely there weren't this many deer 100 years ago, and I'm guessing we had fewer predators then. My thinking is that some sort of course correction...
