Thanks for the comments. We also saw two other birds of different ages. Good news as Birds of the World says:
Population most recently considered to number 1500–1700 mature individuals by BirdLife International, with perhaps as many as 2460 individuals in total and 418 breeding pairs in 2008/09 (1), whereas in late 1980s was thought to be perhaps 300–400, with maximum of c. 165 adults seen in 1987, and > 70 chicks reared successfully most years; bird
Incidentally, only now looking at this photo again, it seems to have been ringed - I think there is a silver ring on its right foot in the flight photo.
