Snake ID - Southern Spain (1 Viewer)

A friend sent me this photo taken in the Alpujarras in Southern Spain. Is it a grass snake?

She estimates it was 5 to 6 feet in length, so pretty big.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Christian, my only other book assisted guess would be Montpellier Snake then. Going off the uniform colour, "eyebrows" and size.

Certainly looks like a Montpellier snake.I had one in France and the colouration was different to the one in your photo but this is apparently due to the fact that they vary in colouration as they age. They can grow up to two metres in length and are the largest snake in the region.
