At the end of December I am taking a tour of Sri Lanka. I have visited before and seen a lot of the sites for birds covered in standard tours. This time I will have two-three days in the north where I want to explore coastal areas to locate waders. Birders are only just starting to explore this region again. I will be visiting Mannar and then spending two nights in Jaffna from which to explore that area. I am interested to hear of any sites where there have traditionally been good numbers of shorebirds. The ultimate goal would be to discover a wintering spoon-billed sandpiper or two but this is very unlikely. I would be happy just to document a good selection of waders from the central Asian flyway.
If anyone has any suggestions of specific sites where I could concentrate my efforts around the Jaffna area, I'd be most grateful. Roost sites or areas where birds become concentrated as the tide comes in would be especially useful.
Many thanks and good birding
