They think the possible is probably a hybrid tufted/pochard from last brandon posting.

During 2010, my good friend Gary Prescott (53) AKA the Biking Birder, a special needs teacher in the West Midlands, is cycling to every RSPB nature reserve and Wildfowl and Wetland Trust site in the UK open to the public. His aim is to cycle at least 5,000 miles to over 190 nature reserves over the year in order to raise funds for three charities; namely the RSPB, the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust and Asthma UK (Gary is asthmatic).

In addition to this physical feat, Gary is also be attempting to break the non-motorised year list record. He is now tantalisingly close to the target (252) as he finishes his jouney down the east coast before heading back up the country to the West Midlands for Christmas. There are a number of key species Gary is missing and any information regarding Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Garganey, Long-eared Owl and Woodlark will be gratefully received. Given some of these are sensitive species I am happy for you to Private Message me and I will pass the details onto Gary.

More information, including where he will be on each day and how to support his efforts, is available on his website www.bikingbirder.co.uk. A fuller account of his travels is available on his daily blog at www.bikingbirder2010.blogspot.com.

Many Thanks
Phil

If anyone has any further info for LSW or LEO in Warks it would be most appreciated.

There's a long eared owl gettin greported from Willington GPs, Derbyshire - not sure how easy is it but being reported a lot. I guess he may already know about it though.

Something that might interest you guys & gals. I had a message left in my web sites guest book from a chap in Nuneaton. He posted it on Nov 25th but I must admit I don't check my guest book that often and didn't see it until a few days ago. He was telling me about a Ring Ouzel that was in his garden from Nov 21st to the 25th.

Not knowing anything about this chap I had a bit of a doubt regarding this find (could it be a partial Leucistic Blackbird) so I apologise to him for having that doubt. I did tactfully ask if he had any photos and sure enough after a few days he sent me a couple, and they are below.

I must admit I have never heard of a Ring Ouzel in a Midlands garden before, plus so late in the year as well, so I sent this news off to a few good Midland birders I know and apparently there had been a similar one in Fishponds Road, in Kenilworth from before Christmas 1995 to the 4th of January.

What a garden bird though, and one so late as well. I wonder if it is going to try and overwinter (this weather wouldn't be very conducive to its well being) or if it would try to carry on its late migration.

John

Urban Med Gull

Opened the curtains on my boys room to be greeted with a fly-by adult Med Gull. It then did several passes over the garden and then landed on the next door but ones shed roof. It was present on and off all day and according to Helen my other half has been present for a couple of days. A few record shots taken with a compact camera through double glazing.

John
