Like the previous post (Wilfred Stalker) another case of Mathew's indifference to the spelling of people's names. I this case however at least one honorific is spelled wrong:

Cracticus quoyi tunneyi Hartert, 1905

Puffinus assimilis tunneyi Mathews, 1912

Epthianura crocea tunneyi Mathews, 1912

Carbo gouldi tunneyi Mathews, 1912

Fregata ariel tunnyi Mathews, 1914

This honours

John Thomas Tunney 1870–1929
BIRTH 11 OCT 1870 • Kojonup, Western Australia, Australia
DEATH 10 JUN 1929 • Kojonup, Western Australia, Australia

Note the Key and Eponym have 1871 I believe.

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:
Black Butcherbird ssp. Cracticus quoyi tunneyi Hartert, 1905 NCR [JS Cracticus quoyi spaldingi]
Black-faced cormorant ssp. Carbo gouldi tunneyi Mathews, 1912 NCR [JS Phalacrocorax fuscescens NRM]
Little Shearwater ssp Puffinus assimilis tunneyi Mathews, 1912
Yellow Chat ssp. Epthianura crocea tunneyi Mathews, 1912
Lesser Frigatebird ssp Fregata ariel tunnyi Mathews, 1914 NCR [JS Fregata ariel ariel]
John Thomas Tunney (1871-1929) was an Australian farmer and professional collector for the Western Australian Museum (1895-1906). He led the Turnney expedition to the Nothern Territory (1903) for Lord Rothschild (q.v.) of the Tring Museum. Oldfield Thomas wrote a paper on the expedition's findings (1904) entitled 'On a collection of mammals made by Mr. J. T. Tunney in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory of South Australia.' A mammal is also named after him. We assume the spelling tunnyi (not tunneyi) in the frigatebird's trinomial to be a lapsus calami on Mathews's part, but the notorious lack of etymologies in his descriptions makes it impossible to know for sure.

Mus tunneyis, Thomas 1904 OD here (think today Tunney's rat Rattus tunneyi (Thomas , 1904 )) is the mentioned mammal.

  • Cracticus quoyi tunneyi Hartert, 1905 OD here
  • Carbo gouldi tunneyi Mathews, 1912 OD here
  • Puffinus assimilis tunneyi Mathews, 1912 OD here
  • Epthianura crocea tunneyi Mathews, 1912 OD here
  • Fregata ariel tunnyi Mathews, 1914 OD here

The type series of Fregata ariel tunnyi Mathews are AMNH 729589-729596 (2 males, 5 females) collected by J. T. Tunney on Bedout Island surely this is good enough evidence of a lapsus calami?
