took this photo half way up a mountain in Argyleshire, there were loads of these big dragonflies about. anybody know what they are?

According to the book "Brooks & Lewington" it could be a male Golden-ringed Dragonfly. (Cordulegaster boltonii). I await confirmation (or otherwise) from the experts.

Definitely a Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) - easy to identify, despite being part obscured by that insect. Possibly Grey Alder (Alnus incana) behind, but too blurred to be certain

thanks all. did't think that they would be at such an altitude maybe 1000ft and there was no mention of them in my wee insect book
 
1,000 feet, that's a tall tree Billy!!;)
Seriously though, the uplands are the home habitat of this stunning species.
