Today (Jan 16), while I was birding at a lake, a large flock of geese flew straight over my head, fairly high. They were all Canada with the possible exception of one individual. It was noticeably smaller than the Canada Geese it was with, and had a shorter bill. I had a fairly short look, and unfortunately I don't remember a lot about it, as I was initially convinced it was a Cackling Goose. Cackling Geese are rare in this area, but we do get several observations each year. I'm wondering how possible it is that the bird I saw was actually a Lesser Canada Goose (B. c. parvipes) which also are (presumably) rare here, though it would be fairly hard to determine how common/rare they are since nobody's looking for them. Anyway, I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the subject.
Edit: I've been trying to find photos of mixed Canada and Cackling flocks in overhead flight and have come up short. If anyone has one I'd appreciate it.
