Budget lens (1 Viewer)

Alrite!
A friend of mine has decided to get a dslr set up for the first time to photograph anything to do with nature etc.. He's got a second hand Canon camera body on its way so is now wondering whats the best option for a budget priced lens. I sugguested maybe the 75-300mm as its what I started off with and its within this current price range at the moment.
Any other lens worth looking into folks?

I would look at the canon 55-250. I think it is less than $200, has good IS and can produce sharp images. For all around stuff this is high quality for a small price.

Your friend may also want to take a look in on these

Oh one other thing if your friend is looking at a Canon 75-300mm then I strongly recommend him to spend the extra money on the USM version. It's only a little more expensive.

Personally I cannot see the point in the non-USM version when the two are priced so closely together and think it needs to be discontinued. In fact I think there are a lot of Canon lenses still being produced that should now fall by the wayside to alleviate the burden on their production facilities, especially following the Tsunami disaster but I'm straying off topic now. I'll probably start a thread on that quite soon.
