Birding Calakmul (1 Viewer)

Hello, I was thinking about going down to Calakmul and other places on the Yucatan to go birding this December. I was wondering if anybody else has been birding in Calakmul around this time and can recommend any good spots within the bi-reserve or in the surrounding area. Thanks!

Hi, Cowbird5 - My wife and I went in '06. Birding was slow the day we spent in Calakmul. We did better at Kohunlich, east of the Calakmul entrance. If you are coming from Cancun as we did, we also had good birding at Chacchoben.
It's over an hour to Calakmul ruins after passing the gate near the highway so get up early. Also, it is a big place with no printed maps to carry along. You might want to jot down some orientation notes at the entry kiosk before you wander around the seemingly endless masses of stones.
It is a magical place; we certainly would like to go back someday.

Steve
