Bird safe water purificaiton for fountain to prevent algae (1 Viewer)

I have a decorative fountain that is prone to algae growth - it has no visible basin, the water runs up and over three columns. Several birds -Doves, Mockingbirids and Cardinals mostly - have taken to my fountain as a water source. Is there a "bird safe" additive that I can use to prevent algae growth on the fountain? I live in Florida so keeping the fountain out of the sun is next to impossible.
