That really depends on your own personality. I've looked through many binoculars I could not justify buying. They were all interesting in their own way, and some were truly outstanding performers, but I don't feel my life is diminished by not having them. I think anyone interested in optics in themselves (as opposed to owning the best optics they can afford, which is different) should find experiencing the current state of the art genuinely fascinating.

It's actually one of the better enjoyments in life, being able to enjoy seeing things you can't own, and your citation of fine art is one of the best examples of it.

Even when it comes to binoculars, sometimes we're able to plan for the day we are able to afford a more expensive pair, or on the other hand, maybe we realize that we don't see enough appreciable difference to justify wanting them.
