New blog-post. Wednesday was meant to be dry, then it wasn't, then it wasn't (but much earlier), then it turned out to be....at least long enough for me to get some birding in....

Erm .... can you translate for me please? Is that Gaelic or Erse?

Lovely Bullfinch and Hedge Sparrow or is it Accentor these days? Love the Redwing too!

Neither, it is Scots. A damp, grey, (gloomy, miserable sort of weather) walk. As for the wee brown bird I just stick with Dunnock (much less typing required).

Ok then, I’ve learned a little Scots today👍
I think it was Hedge Sparrow before it was Dunnock wasn’t it? I think I still have my ancient Observers Book of Birds somewhere, I’ll try and find it and check.
That is after I clean up the cats attempt of masterpiece art in the Jackson Pollack style. This after I spent hours vacuuming, steam cleaning then polishing the wood floor and finally putting all the furniture back. Damn cats.

According to the Oxford Book Of British Bird Names the earliest record is around 1475 for donek, 1483 for Dunoke, 1611 for Dunneck and 1824 for Dunnock. For Hedge Sparrow 1530 as Hedge Sparrowe, then 1570 as "Pinnocke, hedge sparrow". Interestingly Pinnock seems to pre-date both to around 1250 as pinnuc then the 1570 mentioned above. Hedge Accentor arrived in 1825.
