Put the camera into Av mode and set your preferred aperture, ISO, focus mode, shot speed and custom functions and then register that setup to either C1 or C2. See page 186 of the manual for instructions on registering (storing) the settings.
You could, for example, set C1 to be for perched birds, with One Shot focus and maybe low FPS or single shot, perhaps centre point AF only. For C2 perhaps you might set that for BIF, with AI Servo AF and high FPS, possibly with all focus points enabled.
I don't use C1 and C2 but I think the following is correct and worth noting....
Any time the camera goes to sleep or you turn it off and back on it will reset any values you may have adjusted back to the stored values. e.g. if you started with C1 at f/4 and 0EC but added some +ve EC while shooting, if the camera dozes off the EC will be reset back to 0 when you reawaken the camera. Some people extend the time before sleeping so that these resets do not occur at inopportune moments.
